Congratulations to John Smilges, who will be starting in the fall as Assistant Professor of English and Affiliate Faculty of Women’s Studies at Texas Woman’s University in my old home town of Denton, TX.

John explains that, “The position was intended for a candidate who specializes in cultural rhetorics, and I was selected based on my work with queer, trans, and disability rhetorics. In fact, one of the courses I’ll be teaching this fall was one I proposed during my campus visit, “Queer Rhetorics in Crisis,” which will look to the AIDS epidemic for guidance on how to survive (and perhaps thrive) in our current pandemic. I am so very excited for the opportunity, and I am incredibly grateful to my committee, including Cheryl Glenn (Chair), Debra Hawhee, Janet Lyon, and Hil Malatino (WGSS).”
