The Deluge is the undergraduate research journal of Penn State University’s Department of English. Nationwide, increased attention has been paid in recent years to undergraduate research in the humanities, and the Department of English would like to highlight the kinds of research its undergraduates undertake each year. This journal includes research papers written in classes and for honors theses. It also includes essays on internship experiences. Each year several English majors participate in internships with English faculty, assisting professors in their book and article research, and in internships at related venues, such as the Special Collections department in the Pattee and Paterno Libraries or the Penn State University Press. The Deluge is written by Penn State students, but also edited and published entirely by them. This issue was created by the students of English 497b in the spring of 2007. Students in the class learned basic editing and Web publishing skills, edited all the essays you see in this issue, and then constructed the journal. The students worked collaboratively on all the aspects of a web-based journal including layout, design, navigation, and structure. The students accomplished a lot this semester, and they hope you enjoy the journal.

The Deluge is published each spring. Deluge seeks submissions from Penn State English majors, students who have written research papers in Penn State English classes, and students who have been research interns with an English professor or with other appropriate institutions. Submissions might be honors theses, seminar papers from senior seminars, research papers from 400-level English courses, or accounts of internship experiences. Submissions should use Microsoft Word, twelve-point Times New Roman font, and double line spacing, and should use MLA style citations (parenthetical citations with a Works Cited page). Please consult the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers. Submissions for the Spring 2008 issue will be considered on an on-going basis until the end of January, 2008. Students will be required to sign a publication agreement that gives the journal permission to publish their manuscript but also allows students to retain copyright control over their papers. Please secure permission to publish any copyrighted visual images or print materials falling outside of academic fair use guidelines. |
