In fall of 2010, Debra Hawhee (Professor of English) was invited by the organizers of the Chicago Humanities Festival to conduct a live interview with basketball legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. The festival’s theme was “The Body,” and Hawhee, a scholar of bodily rhetorics with an earlier life as a Division-I basketball player, spoke with Kareem about his own life as an athlete and scholar, his work with famed UCLA coach John Wooden, his devotion to western and eastern arts of the body, and his reflections on his famous hook shot.
