Professional Bio

Richard Kopley, Distinguished Professor of English at Penn State DuBois, is the author of The Threads of “ The  Scarlet Letter” (U of Delaware P, 2003) and Edgar Allan Poe and the Dupin Mysteries (Palgrave Macmillan, 2008).  He is also the editor of Poe’s Pym: Critical Explorations (Duke UP, 1992), Prospects for the Study of American Literature (NYU Press, 1997), and Poe’s The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym (Penguin, 1999).  With Jackson R. Bryer, he co-edits the annual Resources for American Literary Study (AMS) and with Barbara Cantalupo has co-edited the second volume of Prospects for the Study of American Literature (AMS, 2009).  He has recently completed compiling the Poe bibliography for the Oxford Bibliography Online and co-editing, with Jana Argersinger, Poe Writing / Writing Poe (to be published by AMS).  Former president of the Poe Studies Association and the Nathaniel Hawthorne Society, he has spoken on Poe and Hawthorne in the United States and abroad.
