His work has received grants from the Ford and Rockefeller foundations and from the World Bank. Co-author of the "Asmara Declaration on African Languages and Literatures," he serves as organizing chair of Against All Odds: African Languages and Literatures into the 21st Century (Eritrea) and Buwa: African Languages and Literatures into the 21st Century (South Africa)
