"Radio Free Valis:
Tuning In To The Involution with Philip K. Dick"
December 12th, 2013 at 6pm PST/9pm EST
Presented by SynchCast and Penn State University
Few writers or artists have captured the uncanny feeling and flavor of 21st century life than Philip K. Dick. In scores of novels, hundreds of short stories and thousands of pages of The Exegesis, PKD danced and stumbled, comically and tragically, with the slippery nature of reality and life in a world increasingly saturated with the technologies and metaphors of information. While the sciences of information theory (Shannon), molecular biology (Watson and Crick), and physics (Bohm, Wheeler, Burks) all began to scientifically model reality as composed of information rather than matter, Dick found himself living in a reality he characterized as "nailed by information." With the help of live, video webinar technology, we'll explore Dick's novels, essays and The Exegesis for fifteen hours over six weeks. Together we'll begin to map and experiment with Dick's informatic cosmos where changes in the logos effect changes in material reality through the feedback loops of consciousness and information.
After a sufficient dosage of PKD's work, webinar participants are likely to experience an "involution" - a re-orientation of consciousness away from matter and toward the apparently internal domain suffused by consciousness. Dick sometimes named this experience "VALIS."

Professor Richard Doyle, aka "mobius", has taught courses on Philip K. Dick since 1994. Since reading the work of futurist Alvin Toffler at age 12, Doyle has been on a scholarly and personal quest to understand the effects of information technologies on the evolution of human culture. After completing a PhD at UC Berkeley and a post doctoral fellowship at MIT, he has received grants from the National Science Foundation and written a trilogy of scholarly books on the effects of information technologies on human evolution and the effects of language on consciousness. His latest, Darwin's Pharmacy: Sex, Plants & The Evolution of the Noösphere, focuses on the co-evolution of humans with psychedelic plants such as psilocybin, cannabis and ayahuasca. http://mobiused.wordpress.com/
