LA (ENGL) 495 Internship

LA (ENGL) 495: Writing Internship is offered to qualified students interested in writing, editing, or public relations careers.  Few experiences are as valuable in helping you choose a career path and/or secure your first job.  English interns learn what it is actually like to write or edit professionally and complete the internship with a portfolio of published work and potential sources of recommendations for future jobs.

English Internships fall into three general categories:  on-campus public relations offices, news organizations, and public service organizations.  They require about ten hours per week at the assigned site plus completion of various academic assignments.  Application deadlines are generally October 15 for spring semester and March 1 for fall semester.  If the deadline has passed, contact Dr. Steele Nowlin to see about late-breaking opportunities.  Summer internships are also available.

Suggested course work in English might include ENGL 215, 415, 417, 418, 421.

The Internship may be taken for three to twelve credits, only three of which may be applied towards the English Major and the Creative Writing Concentration.   The Media, Publishing, and Professional Writing Concentration and the Rhetoric and Writing Concentration both require three credits of LA (ENGL) 495, while six credits may be applied towards the Technical Writing Minor.  Other credits may be used as electives.

Program Prerequisites:

  1. Completed application
  2. Interview with Steele Nowlin, Internship Coordinator
