Professional Bio

Broadly speaking, Philip is intrigued by the areas of contact between the biological sciences and rhetorical study. Current interests in this contested terrain include:

  • how anxiolytic writing exercises developed by psychologists can be ethically integrated into composition curricula;
  • what cosmetic regimens might help us understand our individual narratives about race, gender, and identity; and
  • whether rhetoric might be more fruitfully considered a practice of human echolocation.

Philip also is a passionate educator who has tutored undergraduate writing, taught English abroad, and coached students with learning differences on executive functioning. His pedagogy is centered on engaging the diverse perspectives, skills, and knowledges that students bring into the classroom with the goal of helping students see themselves agents of their own education.
