Funding and Support

The Department funds all of the MA and PhD students it admits. We expect that students admitted to the MA will go on to the PhD, so students in the MA-PhD program have six years of funding for seminars and dissertation research. In addition, the Department offers a wide range of enhancements and supplements to funding and support to both incoming and continuing students. We want to recruit the strongest students, and we want to offer additional support to those who distinguish themselves as they move through their programs.

MA-PhD applicants are considered for University-wide awards:

  • University Graduate Fellowships
  • Graduate Scholar Awards
  • Bunton-Waller Awards

MA-PhD applicants and continuing students are considered for College and Department awards:

  • Sparks Fellowship
  • Kelly Fellowship in 19th-century British and American Literature
  • Wilma Ebbitt Fellowship in Rhetoric
  • Ben Euwema Fellowship

Continuing MA-PhD students are considered for Department and College awards:

  • Department travel funds (Fall and Spring competitions)
