Philip Zapkin’s review of Bethany Hughes’ book Redface: Race, Performance, and Indigeneity was published in the SAIL Review.

The review was published in the Spring 2026 edition of The SAIL Review. Hughes’s book looks at the performance traditions of the “Stage Indian” and how those traditions shaped both non-Indigenous conceptions of Indigenous Americans and reflected back to reshape Indigenous conceptions of self and culture.
