Sarah Winstein-Hibbs’ article “Staging Charisma: Anna Deavere Smith’s Black Feminist Theater of the Multitude” appeared in the September 15th issue of American Literary History.

Here is Sarah’s description of the piece: “The article suggests that Smith’s plays provide an alternative understanding of charisma – a term which most often connotes spectacular individual male leadership. Instead, as I argue, Smith’s verbatim theater enacts a Black feminist mode of collectivist charisma, one which has been and can be transported from stage to streets and vice versa.” Congratulations, Sarah.
