Haley Bateman

Professional Bio

Haley Bateman is a Master's Graduate student on the M.A./Ph.D. track in the Department of English. Their research centers around African American women's literature, Black diasporic cultural productions, folklore, public history, and queer theory. They are specifically interested in archival studies and how narrative revival functions to restore and reclaim marginalized (hi)stories.
They received the Louise Baugher Black Award for Non-Fiction for their research on queer silence and disability studies, and their co-authored article “‘We can’t stop living’: No Love for Queer Memoirs in the Heartland,” was published in a special issue of Midwestern Miscellany. Currently they are interested in exploring Black concert dance as an anthropological and literary ground for activism, and deepening their knowledge of culturally responsive teaching pedagogy and practice.
