Registering for English 15

The Department of English does not allow students to override current course limits for English 15. There are many sections of English 15 offered each semester. Make sure you take the opportunity to sign up for your classes as soon as you are permitted, and hopefully you will be able to enroll next semester. Feel free to contact your academic adviser for other options if you cannot register for English 15 this semester.

Registration for English 202A, 202B, 202C, and 202D

Check your major’s requirements or speak with your adviser to find out which 202 you will need to take. The 202 courses are not interchangeable. Here are the four English 202 courses:

  • 202A, Effective Writing: Writing in the Social Sciences
  • 202B, Effective Writing: Writing in the Humanities
  • 202C, Effective Writing: Technical Writing
  • 202D, Effective Writing: Business Writing

In order to enroll in English 202, it is a prerequisite that you must have projected fourth-semester standing or higher—that is, have earned 44.1 or more credits.

No, only a staff member from the Department of English, with permission from the Director of the Program on Writing and Rhetoric, can enroll you in a class that is full. This is only done for extenuating circumstances.

The Department of English will override you into a section, but you must do the following:

  • File your intent to graduate.
  • Complete the accommodation enrollment request form: https://forms.office.com/r/TZsaYbPAQM
Note: Be sure to enter the correct name and email address for your advisor. The form will contact your advisor to verify that you intend to graduate. The English Department cannot provide you an accommodation without verification from your advisor.
  • Continue to try to enroll in 202. Add your name to the waitlist of as many sections of the course as possible and/or keep checking the schedule of courses for openings.
  • Note that the waitlist updates hourly, so you may not see your name immediately.
  • If you have followed all of the above steps and are still unable to enroll in a section, midway through the add/drop period Lynn Setzler will assign you to a section based on your current academic schedule.

Be sure to check your schedule from time to time to see which section you have been assigned. We cannot notify everyone via email.

We also cannot guarantee your enrollment in a specific section of ENGL 202 (A, B, C, or D). The section will be assigned based on your class schedule.

The class we assign you to may not meet on the day or times you would like, but unfortunately, we are unable to place everyone in their ideal section and we are not able to schedule around your work schedule, only your class schedule.

Please note: The department will accommodate you into a section only once. If, for whatever reason, you drop or swap the class, we will not be able to accommodate you into a different section or the same section. Please be very careful not to delete the section that was assigned to you as part of the accommodation.

Seats in online sections of English 202 do not open to resident instruction students until seven days prior to the start of classes. At that point, you can enroll in a World Campus section. For more information, contact World Campus at registration@worldcampus.psu.edu.

  • Have an official letter/email from your department adviser on letterhead stating you are filing your intent to graduate and that you need the course to graduate this semester.
  • File your intent to graduate.
  • Submit the letter/email from your adviser to registration@worldcampus.psu.edu.

Please note:
The department will accommodate you into a section only once. If, for whatever reason, you drop the class, they will not be able to accommodate you into a different section or the same section. Please be very careful not to delete the section that was assigned to you.

Add your name to the waitlist of as many sections of the course as possible and/or keep checking the schedule of courses for openings. The waitlist updates hourly, so you may not see your name immediately.

If you are already enrolled in a section of 202 but would like to enroll in a different one, make sure you select the “Swap” option on the waitlist and not the “Add” option.

You cannot simultaneously be enrolled in two sections of the same class. (For example, two sections of English 202D that meet at different times). If you are trying to trade one section of the class for another section at a different time, you must select “Swap.”

For more information on waitlisting and swapping a class, visit https://www.registrar.psu.edu/lionpath/knowledge-center/registration-faqs.cfm.

The Department of English will not override you into a course based on a prerequisite course requirement. Your college, however, may choose to adjust this prerequisite requirement. Check with your adviser to see if that is possible.

The department has registration controls on certain sections due to specific topics or certain specialized sections (information for these sections can be viewed in the notes section of LionPATH). If you receive the message “prerequisites have not been met,”review the notes section to see if this is a specialized section. If you are interested in enrolling in these specialized sections, read through the course description in the notes section of LionPATH.

If you are still interested after reading the specialized course information, please send an email to las36@psu.edu. In that email, you must include:

  • an acknowledgement that you have read the description and understand that the course content is specialized;
  • your Penn State student ID number (this is a nine-digit number that typically begins with 9); and
  • confirm that you have the prerequisite of at least 44.1 credits on your transcript.

If there is space available in the section, Lynn Setzler will enroll you in the class.
